Maybe not so marathon week….

I have bad news. After trying to take the first few steps this morning of my run it was clear that what I was hoping was just tired sore feet is actually a full blown injury. I feel like the timing of this couldn’t be much worse. I ran on Sunday with a stabbing pain in my arch but really hoped that it would get better with a little rest but it hasn’t. I headed to my Physical Therapist this morning after a slightly hysterical email to get checked out. They think I have the very beginnings of posterior tibial tendonitis.

The symptoms of tendonitis of the posterior tibial tendon include pain in the instep area of the foot and swelling along the course of the tendon. In some cases the tendon may rupture, due to weakening of the tendon by the inflammatory process. Rupture of the tendon leads to a fairly pronounced flatfoot deformity that is easily recognizable.

They sent me off with a taped foot and instructions to rest and not expect this to heal quickly.
*please excuse janky toenails and flip-flops, shoes hurt

While my PT is not really in favour of my ironman training (he thinks it’s nuts for anyone) he thinks I will be able to get through IMCDA. He said it would be painful (great) but I should probably be able to do it. That probably makes me nervous!

The bad news is that they said NO MARATHON this weekend. I don’t think that has fully sunk in yet, while not as devastating as not being able to do IMCDA it’s still a big letdown. I haven’t fully committed to not doing it yet, but know I shouldn’t. Recovery might start tonight with some heavy drinking.

How do you deal with injury setbacks?

Crickets...

I know...it's been crickets here lately....I got hit with a triple whammy and haven't really worked out in WEEKS, seriously, weeks. So I have had nothing to talk about =( this blog may need to branch out into other parts of my life.

I not only am dealing with an overuse knee injury that will take who knows how long to heal but a pulled hamstring and a killer summer cold. The only good thing I can say about this all happening at once is that I can focus on getting well all at once.

I am still (foolishly) hopeful that I will still be able to race a half ironman on September 11.

So what have I done with all of my spare time? well my DVR is empty and I have been focusing a lot on work. Evidence of the things I have been learning about:
What is something new that you have learned?

Worried

I am worried that I might have a mid season knee injury, again. This morning while trying to get 6 miles in on the treadmill my left knee had stabbing pain behind the knee cap. Last summer I had similar pain in my right knee and was sidelined for the second half of the season. I am very worried that it's happening again. So now I sit in a hotel room in San Diego, hoping that the pain just goes away....

Injuries, Pugs and Train Gain

For a little over a week now my right quad has been hurting me, nothing terrible but it was a new pain so I have been keeping tabs on it. It only hurt a bit after my race on Sunday so I wasn’t worried at all about it, but last night it started hurting worse and I woke up this morning with it still feeling bad. I decided to push my brick back until tomorrow, and I will only do that if it feels better. I am so worried about being injured, so many people are injured right now, so many bloggers are taking forced time off of running, I really want to be careful and not make things worse. I did go to the gym this morning to try to go for an easy run but my leg was hurting and I was feeling crappy anyway so I only made it about 3 miles before quitting. I went home, iced my leg and wrapped it in an ace bandage for the rest of the day.

I am going to try to do everything I can to help this leg heal quickly. Hopefully Taking a couple days off will do the trick and I can run my planned 22 miles this weekend.

I recently started reading a new blog called Carrots N Cake, I was originally attracted to the blog because she frequently posts about her adorable pug. I am a little obsessed with pugs, Mr. Winston thinks that's only natural.
But she has some other great posts too, yesterday she wrote about training for a marathon and gaining weight. It was exactly what I needed to read. I haven’t been gaining weight, but I sure as heck haven’t lost any! It’s so easy to think I can eat whatever I want because I am working out so much, people even tell me that I can. But it’s a lot easier to eat 1,000 calories than it is to burn them! On to better things as I keep my feet elevated at work. Do you think that my co workers will think I am rude?

Knee Pain

I had to cut my tempo run short this morning because my right knee was hurting. After not running for two months this summer I am really hoping this will go away fast. I should have already learned this lesson, my right knee isn’t completely healed (one doctor told me to just learn to live with the pain) and I know it starts hurting when I don’t ice after EVERY workout. For the last week it hasn’t even occurred to me to ice after workouts. What the heck, how can I just forget to ice?!?! So now I am sitting here with ice packs on my knees hoping that the pain this morning won’t turn into anything worse.

Training plan for the weekend:

Saturday: 1.5 hours on the bike trainer, I need to pick up a good movie tonight!

Sunday: 13 mile run, just need to decided where, I am thinking trail run. One of the upsides of us not getting snow is that the trails are still dry. Although I do sometimes like running in the snow, Proof from last year:

Hope everyone has a happy Friday!
